Misarticulation
About Misarticulation
Misarticulation happens in people of all ages. A child may not learn how to produce sounds correctly or may not learn the rules of speech sounds on his or her own. Delayed phonological development leads to unclear speech in these children. Factors that may lead to misarticulation include:
- Developmental disorders (e.g. Autism)
- Genetic syndromes (e.g. Down Syndrome)
- Hearing Loss
- Weak oromotor ability/ other oromotor deficit, e.g. Cleft palate
- Neurological disorders (e.g. cerebral palsy)
- Multi-lingual environment
Articulation Assessment
Speech therapist will conduct an articulation assessment with the clients using standardized / non-standardized assessment tools under playful environment to diagnose the severity and possible causes of the problem. A written assessment report will be given.
Treatment
Tailor-made training course and goals will be set by speech therapist according to individual performance. Training for pre-school children will be carried out under playful environment, which can be divided into individual therapy or group therapy. Parental training will also be given through observation and participation in the lesson so as to ensure the parents can acquire the parental skills to help training the children's speech at home. Home practice will also be given.
